It’s doubtful there’s anywhere in the world where one sport is more important to the national psyche than rugby sevens is to Fiji.
“I’ve got kids named after me,” Fiji rugby sevens coach Ben Ryan admitted with a laugh on Wednesday morning after his team’s first training session at East Vancouver’s Empire Fields. “If we won an Olympic gold medal, I don’t know what would happen.”
Fiji is one of 16 teams set to play in the inaugural Canada Sevens this weekend. The tournament, which goes Saturday and Sunday at B.C. Place, is the sixth of 10 stops on the World Rugby Sevens Series. Fiji won the 2014-15 overall series title.
The Fijians are hot favourites for a least a medal, quite possibly gold, in rugby sevens’ debut at the Olympics this summer in Rio de Janeiro.
If Fiji wins, it’s safe to say “wild” will be an understatement when describing the party.
Last May, having returned from England with the sevens series title in hand, the bus carrying the team from the airport in Nadi to the team’s base in Suva was blocked time and again by passionate fans, some by lying in the road. What is normally a trip of a couple hours became an eight-hour marathon.
“Religion is very important (in Fiji),” Ryan explained on Wednesday after practice. “Rugby is part of that. Religion’s intertwined with everything we do.
“The state of the nation’s ‘feel good’ is based a lot around the success of the rugby team.”
There’s a direct connection between the sevens players and the country — the squad that won in Las Vegas last weekend was entirely composed of players who live, work and play in Fiji.
“Prison officers, policemen, army officers, hotel staff, it’s pretty amazing,” Ryan went on. “You can see why the people back home see it as the nation’s team: they’re coming from the nation’s villages, they’re working with the people. They might be seen as stars but their day-to-day stuff is very much a normal life.”
The full-time contracted members of the squad aren’t doing it for the money, either. They make around $12,500 a year, a decent wage for the country but far from the big offers available in the rich leagues of England, France and Australia.
There are just under a million people scattered throughout the archipelago of 330 islands. The per capita income is less than $5,000.
“In Fiji, rugby makes people happy,” Fijian rugby sevens legend Waisale Serevi said.
That’s the core of it. As a young boy, Serevi saw how thrilled people were with the victory of the Fijians over the famous British Lions team, which was on tour.
“I wanted to play rugby to make people happy,” he said.
When the sevens are on, everything stops. Some villages share a generator just to power the TV that shows all the games. Everyone gets together.
Fijian kids get to know their national heroes — and the heroes of other countries.
Canadian rugby players don’t often get much fan adulation at home, but when they visit Fiji, they’re swarmed by young fans.
“The kids knew all the sevens players,” said Harry Jones, who was with a Canadian fifteens team for a tournament a year ago in Fiji.
Ryan says the job from here on is simple: win the gold. He was hired three years ago to make that happen. His team is ready to do it.
“Anything less than that is not seen as agreeable.”
